Money and Banking

Money

Bhutan’s currency is the Ngultrum (Nu.) that is at par with the Indian rupee. Banks in Bhutan exchange major currencies such as USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, CAD, CHF, JPY, some other Asian and Scandinavian currencies. We recommend our travellers to bring US dollars in cash as it is readily acceptable at most hotels, handicraft stores and some shops in the country. ATMs are available in all main towns throughout Bhutan for dispensing cash using a Visa, MasterCard, MaestroCard and RuPay. Amex card is accepted in a few rare cases, but not at the ATMs. Traveller’s cheque can also be easily exchanged at major banks with a 1% commission charge, but now it is increasingly fading out of use. In addition, POS (Point of Sale) services are available nationwide to pay by card. It is recommended that you change spending money on arrival before you leave the airport.

Banking

Bhutan banking systems have been continuously improving and comparable to the international banks. Some of the major banks that you can use in Bhutan are Bhutan National Bank Ltd, Bank of Bhutan Limited, Druk PNB Bank Ltd and T Bank Ltd. Many of these banks also provide other services including POS Terminal, TT or fund transfer, MoneyGram, SMS, internet banking and so on.
